Located at the gates of Bordeaux, Château Pape Clément has a history spanning seven centuries and is one of the oldest wine estates in the region. The estate was donated at the end of the 13th century to Bertrand de Goth by his brother as a gift for his appointment as archbishop of Bordeaux. When Bertrand de Goth was later elected Pope in 1305 and took the name of Clement V, he renamed his estate, Pape Clément. Since 1983, the Chateau has been owned by the Bordeaux entrepreneur Bernard Magrez.
The vineyards of the estate extend over 60 hectares managed on a micro parcel basis. The plants, which have an average of about 30 years of age, enjoy an exceptional terroir on clayey gravel soils of Pyrenean origin. The harvest is manual and after the various vinification operations, the wine is aged in barrels for 18 months.
The wine reveals a beautiful ruby color with violet reflections. Its aromatic profile is intense and fruity with notes of blackberry, dark cherry, and currant and floral nuances of violet. On the palate, it is a highly elegant wine with fine, velvety tannins and marked acidity. The finish is long and persistent with fruity notes and light hints of licorice. It is the ideal wine for roasted game birds, such as partridge.
