Château de Saint Cosme is one of the historic estates of Gigondas. Owned by the Barruol family since 1490, it is now managed by Louis Barruol, who converted the vineyards to biodynamic agriculture in 2010. The estate covers approximately 15 hectares of vineyards, on a site where viticulture dates back to Roman times.
This intense and full-bodied Gigondas is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, with small additions of Cinsault. The grapes come from parcels located on soils of limestone, marl, and sand from the Miocene. After the harvest, fermentation takes place in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for approximately 2/3 in barrels and 1/3 in concrete, before being bottled.
In the glass, the wine reveals a fragrant and concentrated character with a broad bouquet of plum, berries, black cherry, and dried strawberry, followed by hints of aromatic herbs, licorice, and cocoa. On the palate, it is deep and concentrated, rich and fruity. It has lively acidity, firm but ripe tannins, and a long finish that recalls notes of pepper and ripe fruit. Leave it in the cellar for a few years or open a bottle and enjoy it with grilled red meats or herb-roasted lamb.
