Chateau Cohola was founded by Cheli and Jerome, a young couple who met as students in Andalucia. In 2012 they bought a rundown property in Sablet which they have restored and now have some 5 hectares of prime vineyards close to the highest point in the village. The vineyards are all certified as organic and the couple mature their wines in a stunning 7th century cellar close to Roquefort in the Averyron.
This is their flagship Chateauneuf du Pape which captures the talent and vision of the young couple perfectly inside the bottle. The blend is primarily composed of Grenache along with smaller quantities of Syrah and Mourvedre as is traditional for this style of wine. Their vineyards are located in Bédarrides, an area that is known for sand, gravel and clay soils and thus gives plenty of diversity and variety to their wines.
There’s a deep ruby red colour in the glass and you’ll immediately notice the charming notes of dried fruit, prunes, ripe black cherries and cassis. On the palate there are all the telltale signs of a good Chateauneuf du Pape, including firm tannins, a robust full body, and a solid core of black fruit seasoned with oak and spice from the lengthy maturation. A great red to pair with hearty red meat dishes or to cellar for a few more years.
