Ruby red with violet undertones, the colors of the wine are evocative of the fruit aromas and flavors. On the nose, instant black cherry and plum, boysenberry and currant. Hints of freshly ground coffee intertwine with a sprinkling of cinnamon spice. On the palate, a good smooth structure with vanilla sweetness, tart red cherry acidity, and texture like strawberry shortcake- soft while refreshing. Full and ripe now, this Barbera will benefit from years in the cellar, where the tannins will mellow and more floral notes of crushed violets will take center stage.
This prime example of Italian wine is matched well with its local cuisine- enjoy with osso buco or roasted pork, alongside a pizza with rich tomato sauce and creamy mozzarella, or with truffled pasta.
A hardy staple of Northern Italy, Barbera grows well in the calcareous clay of Montelupo. Here, 60 year old vines are well established, and under the careful watch of master enologist Beppe Ca’Viola, the fruit is rich and flavorful. A long time consultant of major wine labels, Beppe turns his focus onto his own estate vineyard, producing wonderfully authentic and beautifully balanced wines. This Barbera d’Alba will continue to evolve in the cellar, with greater spicy notes of nutmeg and anise, and floral lavender and violet. Expect to be continually impressed by this wine!
