Verdicchio is a lesser-known white Italian grape, grown almost exclusively within the region of Marche. The Bisci family are one of the grape’s biggest exponents, crafting a stunning range of crisp white wines from their headquarters in Matelica. The winery consists of 25 hectares, founded in 1972 by brothers Giuseppe and Pierino, and continued today by another pair of brothers, the sons of Giuseppe.
Verdicchio di Matelica is the Bisci family’s first and foremost wine, harvested from calcareous soils within the Matelica DOC. It is straw yellow in the glass, with green tints, and seems to explode with scents of nectarine, lemon zest, and white flowers. It is a strikingly crisp wine, perfect for those seeking a new, under-the-radar favourite.
On the palate, the profile expands into flavours of white-fleshed stone fruit, with floral notes of jasmine, lily, hibiscus, juicy lemon, and a grounded vein of salinity. The grapes were fermented in concrete tanks, before being aged in the bottle for 2 months. A taut, elevated acidity runs through this wine, making it a versatile choice for food pairing. Consider enjoying it alongside white fish, roasted white meat, or a creamy vegetarian pasta dish.
