Godello
Avancia Godello 2019
Ideally drink now through 2023. Serve chilled.
Godello, a once near extinct varietal from Northwestern Spain, has made a comeback in the past couple decades, and Bodegas Avancia has been at the forefront the whole time. The fruit for their Avancia Godello bottling comes from four vineyards, the oldest of which was planted in 1904, and the youngest in 1936. Needless to say, these are some of the oldest Godello vineyards in the Valdeorras. Aromas of peach, apricot, and honey are followed by tastes of pineapple, honeydew melon, and white flowers. Ripe and juicy without being heavy, this medium bodied wine has a good balance of weight and acidity.
Paired with seafood, this wine shows its true strength. A grilled scallop salad, simple halibut ceviche, or a steamed langostine brushed with garlic-herb butter would all be beautiful matches to bring out this wines acidity and fruit forward character.
Located in the province of Galicia in Northwestern Spain, Bodegas Avancia is collaboration between Jorge Ordonez and Bodegas Godeval, both early pioneers who helped reintroduce Godello to the market in the 1990’s. Dry-farmed and sourced from old vines planted high on terraces, the Avancia Godello is fermented with natural yeast in large 500-600 liter oak demi-muids and puncheons. Following fermentation, the wine is aged for 10 months in oak barriques on the lees, and stirred frequently.
