Rioja’s famed Artadi estate was founded in 1985 when 13 local winemakers and grape growers in the town of Laguardia joined together to form a cooperative winery. Before long the incredible potential of their collective vineyard holdings was recognised by Juan Carlos López de Lacalle who purchased the property and began to convert it into one of Spain’s finest producers.

Viña El Pison is Artadi’s iconic wine and takes its name from the exceptional single vineyard site planted on clay and limestone where the grapes are sourced. The vineyard is farmed organically and harvested by hand to ensure the fruit reaches the winery in top condition. The must is then fermented in wooden open-top vats and then aged in new French oak barrels for 12 months.

The result is a remarkably complex and multi-layered wine which displays all the nuances of the terroir and the noble Tempranillo grape. On the nose there are enchanting notes of sweet red cherries, cinnamon, and baked earth while the first sip reveals a fine structure, gentle tannins, and a very long dark fruit finish. The power and intensity of flavour of this magnificent bottling makes it a great match for red meat and it will continue to develop and evolve in the cellar over the next decades.
