Archil Guniava Winery is a boutique, family winery in Georgia’s mountainous heartland. Although Kakheti is the largest wine-making region in Georgia, the region of Imereti (where the Archil Guniava Winery makes its home) is steeped in wine-making history, and massively underrated. Producers tend to aim for small yields, which makes for some wonderfully crisp, refreshing white wines.
With just 1.5 hectares of vineyards in all, Archil Guniava Wine Cellar emphasises quality over quantity. As wine-makers, they are seamlessly integrated with the landscape, harvesting by hand and utilizing a variety of organic methods. The cellar produces just 18000 bottles annually - so grab one while you can.
This fresh white wine is a blend of three Georgian varietals: 60% Tsitska, 20% Tsolikouri and 20% Krakhuna. It’s a perfect drink for a summer’s day, offering a fruity bouquet of green apple, ripe pear and citrus rind. On the palate it is focused and juicy, showing high levels of acidity and further details of honey and herbs. It is a great example of an unadulterated Imeretian wine - it was aged in Qvevri clay pots for 11 months, and bottled without filtering. Consider pairing it with poultry, summer salads or fresh, meaty cheeses.
