Almaviva wine was born in Puente Alto, Chile's Maipo Valley, in the late 1990s from the meeting of Eduardo Guilisasti Tagle, then President of Viña Concha y Toro, and Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, with the aim of producing a French-style Chilean wine, reflecting the unique and exceptional terroir of this part of South America. The name is inspired by the heroic Count Almaviva from The Marriage of Figaro, a classic French literary work later made famous by Mozart's opera.
First produced in 1998, Almaviva is an elegant blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with the addition of Carmenère, and small percentages of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. After harvesting at optimal ripeness and vinification, the finished wine ages in French oak (approximately 70% new) for 20 months, acquiring complexity and elegance.
The result is an iconic wine with a distinctive personality, boasting a broad and delicate aromatic profile. On the nose, Almaviva displays ripe notes of wild strawberries and currants, blackberries, and vanilla, over a background of tertiary aromas such as leather, underbrush, and licorice. On the palate, it is rich, generous, and concentrated. It has a full body and concentrated, perfectly integrated tannins that provide structure and reveal its exceptional aging potential. Keep it in the cellar for a couple of decades, or open a bottle now to enjoy alongside a juicy beef steak.
