Located in the Upper Clutha, near Wānaka in Central Otago, Akitu is a family-run winery founded by Andrew Donaldson in the early 2000s. The estate, whose name is the Māori word meaning "the top" or "apex", encompasses approximately 12 hectares of vineyards dedicated exclusively to the production of Pinot Noir. The A1 is their flagship wine.
Atiku's Pinot Noir A1 is a blend of clones Abel, 777, 115, 5, and 667. The grapes come from the estate's vineyards located on New Zealand's South Island, on a slope characterized by glacial schist soils with a north-facing exposure. Here, the marked temperature variations and altitude create ideal conditions for the full expression of Pinot Noir. After vinification, the finished wine ages in French oak (20% new).
In the glass, the wine reveals a deep color with dark crimson tones and purple highlights. Its aromatic profile is broad and complex with fruity notes of plum and dark cherry, ripe wild berries, and rose petals, interspersed with hints of spice and wild herbs. On the palate, it is concentrated and bold, soft and rich. It has a powerful tannic backbone and a light, well-integrated acidity. The finish is long and smooth. Try it with hog roast, Greek-style lamb, or spicy pork belly.
