Escarpment is one of the most prominent wineries on New Zealand's North Island. Established in Martinborough in the 1980s by Larry McKenna (known as the "Prince of Pinot Noir") the estate encompasses approximately 24 hectares of sustainably farmed vineyards, while also sourcing grapes from local growers.
The Pinot Noir grapes come from an established vineyard in Martinborough. Here, the vines benefit from excellent exposure and a cool, sunny climate, rooting in clay-gravel soils with optimal drainage. These conditions ensure slow, even ripening and guarantee the production of high-quality fruit. Following hand-harvesting, spontaneous fermentation takes place using indigenous yeasts in steel tanks, and the wine subsequently ages in French oak barrels before bottling. The result is a Pinot Noir with a fresh, aromatic character and gentle spicy nuances, perfectly reflecting the essence of Martinborough.
In the glass, the Kiwa Pinot Noir reveals a brilliant, clear ruby hue. Its aromatic profile is complex and expressive, featuring notes of raspberry, sour cherry, ripe strawberry, and dried flowers set against a delicately spicy backdrop. On the palate, it is fresh, fruity, and harmonious, with polished tannins and a lively, well-balanced vein of acidity. The finish is long and persistent, with savory notes intertwining with fruity undertones. Try it with grilled duck breast, roast pigeon, or salmon.
