History

Established in 1999, the Duncan family who also own Silver Oak, acquired the Soda Canyon Ranch in Napa and planted Merlot vines cloned in France. Planted in volcanic, well-drained soil, and benefitting from near perfect growing conditions, the wines produced are nothing short of superb!

Although Twomey was only established in 1999, it has benefitted from over 40 years of experience in the winemaking world from the Duncan family's experience at Silver Oak. They use the same ethos at Twomey as they do at Silver Oak which is “make exceptional, food-friendly wines that are deliciously drinkable upon release.” They looked at expanding the classic Californian Cabernet Sauvignon into other varietals that weren't synonymous with California at the time. Merlot came first followed by Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc sourced from the best appellations in California.

Using sustainable practices as perfected by Silver Oak, they are creating fabulous and unusual wines using techniques that Twomey's founding winemaker, Daniel Baron, developed during his time working in St. Emilion. That experience has transferred into some of the practices now performed at Twomey. When making the Merlot, a method known as soutirage traditionnel is used which involves decanting the wine between barrels. This is done to clarify the wine and is done 6 times during the 18 month aging process.

There have been a number of acquisitions that have allowed Twomey to provide top quality wines from other varietals. Pinot Noirs from several different top quality appellations as well as Sauvignon Blanc has expanded the Twomey offering - though they still ensure that the quality is as high as can be.
