History

Established in 1961, Heitz Wine Cellars is synonymous with fantastic quality wines from the Napa Valley. Since 1961, many things have changed but the Heizt family's core values remain as strong today as they did then - the values of quality, innovation and integrity.

The Heitz Wine Cellars are located in a valley known as Spring Valley which lies in the eastern hills of St. Helena. Covering over 160 acres, the land is prime Napa Valley and the quality associated with Napa shines through here.

The cellar is grey stone and made of hand chiselled perlite. It houses French oak barrels that contain the ageing Heizt wine. The contrast is the cutting edge, high tech equipment that is used around the vineyard - this really is a perfect combination of traditional know-how mixed with cutting edge technology that drives the quality.

The vineyard practices sustainability and is certified organic. They also practice minimum intervention and let nature do the work with just a little help from the family.

There have been many awards and accolades for Heitz Wine Cellars over the years and, in particular, the vineyard designated wines such as Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and Trailside Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact, Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was voted by Wine Spectator as one of the Top 12 wines of the 20th Century.

Interesting Facts

In order to run the vineyards in an organic way, Heizt use natural pest controls to ensure great fruit but without the need for pesticides etc. Owl boxes are constructed; ladybirds are released along with other insects that control pests that can damage the vines. Native wild flowers help reduce erosion while restaurant waste is used as compost.
