What is the aging potential of Chardonnay wines?

The aging potential of Chardonnay is medium and it depends on the winemaking techniques, terroir, and vintage conditions. The best white Burgundies, in particular those from famous villages such as Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault, can mature and evolve in the bottle for 20 years, while developing aromas of honey, nuttiness, and minerality. Although the majority of Chardonnays are best drunk within a few years of release to maintain their clean fruit, some of the most premium bottlings from top producers can develop with time in the cellar giving their owners more complexity and richness.
