What are some common misconceptions about Chardonnay wines?

Common perception that Chardonnay wines are mostly heavy, buttery, and oaky is one of the most spread mistaken ideas. Although some Chardonnays do express these traits especially those from warmer areas and subjected to extensive oak aging and malolactic fermentation, a lot of chardonnays are made in light fresh styles with little oak influence. Moreover, claiming that Chardonnay is one-dimensional grape does not consider the fact that it is a versatile grape and reflects terroir, winemaking techniques and regional character.
