Is Merlot dry or sweet?

Merlot which is a dry red wine is quite popular for its smooth and velvety taste plus sophisticated fruit-forward aromas and flavors. It is usually quite tart tasting and does not have the sweetness that many white and dessert wines have. Merlot's dryness is likely owing to the fermentation which involves the conversion of grapes sugars into alcohol by yeast, consequently leading to a wine with minimal residual sugar. Yet, the overall perceived sweetness can if dependent on the winemaking process and the wine's fruitiness.
