A family-run organic winery, Vallana is located in Alto Piemonte in the town of Maggiora. The family has a long winemaking tradition spanning six generations and approximately 2 centuries. Here, in this lesser-known area of Piedmont, the vineyards enjoy a subalpine climate and a complex and almost unique terroir, generated by the presence of a supervolcano, discovered in 2009. The company, strongly dedicated to producing wines that best express these territories, is today run by Francis and Marina Fogarty.
Barbera is the most planted grape in Piedmont and can make wines that are widely popular for their easy-drinking character and versatility in food pairing. This one, from the Colline Novaresi area, is influenced by the proximity of the Alps, and has a vibrant acid streak. The wine is vinified and aged in cement to preserve the fruity and fresh character of the wine.
Vallana Barbera reveals a fragrant aromatic profile with notes of cherry and berries, black pepper, and earthy hints. On the palate, it has a medium body and a surprising acidity that gives a refreshing kick. The tannins are well-integrated and the finish is long and slightly balsamic. It is a wine ready to drink now, but its acidity will allow it to age well for a few years. Try it with grilled sausages, roast duck, or smoked goat's cheese.
