Regarded as one of the pioneers of the Greek wine renaissance, George Skouras graduated in enology in Dijon and started his own winery in the mid-1980s with the production of the Megas Oenos wine, an unusual and innovative blend, at least for the time, of a local grape with Cabernet Sauvignon. The winery has high-altitude vineyards and is widely known for its wines with an excellent capacity for evolution.
Megas Oenos is a blend of 80% Aghiorghitiko and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are sourced from vineyards in Nude Nemea and the Corinth Mountain, located on rocky soils 700 meters above sea level. The Cabernet vines are about 35 years old, while the Aghiorghitiko ones are between 30 and 66. The grapes are fermented and macerated in stainless steel vats. The aging, instead, takes place in new French barriques for 18 months and in the bottle for the following six months.
This award-winning wine shows a deep and attractive red color, with an impressive aromatic palette starring vanilla, cherry jam, and cedar apples, with traces of chocolate, herbs, peppers and wood. Full mouth, with a pleasant, elegant and balanced style. Excellent aftertaste. Try it with roast beef or grilled red meats, or aged cheeses.
