Located in South Africa's Swartland wine region, Porseleinberg cellar was founded in 2009 by Marc Kent, winemaker at Boekenhoutskloof winery who, with the assistance of oenologist Callie Louw, replanted the estate to Syrah and Grenache grapes. Starting from 40 hectares, the company, whose name derives from the Porselein (Porcelain) mountains, now extends over 130 hectares, most of which is cultivated with Syrah.
The Porseleinberg label produces a single Syrah wine, made from a blend of grapes from the best plots of its own vineyards. The vines are planted on shale-based soils with limited water sources. The harvest is manual and the fermentation takes place in concrete tanks. The wine is then left to age for 12 months in grand foudres and concrete eggs.
The Porseleinberg wine has an intense ruby-red color. The nose reveals elegant aromas of cherries, blueberries, and wild berries, followed by notes of rose petals and violets, spices, and herbs. On the palate, it is juicy and concentrated, lively and elegant. The tannins are velvety and the finish is persistent and recalls spicy notes. It is ideal with lamb, roast or seasoned with spices, and with vegetarian recipes based on aubergines.
