OVID is a red wine from Napa Valley, whose name is inspired by the poet of ancient Rome, Publius Ovidius Naso, and his work Metamorphoses. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot grapes come from a vineyard spanning 15 acres on a secluded mountain top, at over 400 meters above sea level, in the Pritchard Hill area. The soil is rocky and volcanic, ideal for these vines and the vineyard is organically grown. Since 2006, the production has been managed by the oenologist Austin Peterson who exploits his knowledge of the terroir combining it with an experimental approach.
Fermentation takes place exclusively with indigenous yeasts. The finished wine is aged in 60% new French oak for 21 months, and then bottled without fining or filtering.
The OVID Napa Valley Red Wine is a rich and meaty wine that is round and lush. The color is intense and deep. The aromatic profile is seductive with enveloping notes of dark fruit (cassis, blackberry, black cherry, blueberry) supported by aromas of lavender, mulberry, and laurel, and followed by some tertiary aromas such as sweet spices, tobacco, and coffee. On the palate, the wine is powerful and energetic but endowed with great balance and elegance. It is a wine that can age beautifully for several years but can already be appreciated especially in pairing with red meats and game.
