This is a bright Californian Pinot Noir, grown in the Sta. Rita Hills appellation of Santa Barbara County. It starts off with a refined nose of sour cherry, raspberry, cocoa, coffee, and toasted oak. There are six possible labels for this bottle, making it a highly collectible item. It was sourced exclusively from Our Lady of Guadalupe vineyard, and is a blend of Pinot clones, carefully selected for this terroir by the California legend Dave Phinney.
David Phinney began his winemaking career with a small plot of Zinfandel, worked with Robert Mondavi during the 1990s, and is the founder of the iconic Orin Swift Cellars. However, having studied in Florence, Dave has had a long-lived love affair with Europe - this Southern California winery is currently his only project that remains in the United States. The location is a unique one - the west to east orientation allows the ocean air to pour over the vineyard, bringing chilling wind and fog.
On the palate, Our Lady of Guadeloupe is soft and tempting, with a crunchy acidic bite. Red fruits mingle on the tongue, and it offers a long finish with lots of minerality, fennel, and mulled wine spices. It was aged in 49% new French oak before bottling, imparting fine tannins. Enjoy this Pinot Noir alongside an oyster mushroom risotto, roast chicken, or softer pungent cheeses.
