Nk’Mip Cellars is the first Indigenous-owned winery on the entire continent of North America. It was founded in 2002 by the Osoyoos Indian Band, a community within the Okanagan Nation. In fact, the word “Nk’Mip” roughly translates to “bottomland”, referring to the southern tip of the Osoyoos reservation, where the winery is located.
The Qwam Qwmt Chardonnay is packed with scents of melon, pineapple, ripe pear and butterscotch. The name translates to “achieving excellence”, which is suitable, as the Chardonnay grapes are only harvested from the finest blocks of vineyards within Okanagan Valley. The entire orchestra is conducted by Justin Hall, a renowned Indigenous winemaker who honed his craft in Australia and New Zealand.
This Chardonnay continues with a soft, creamy palate, featuring vibrant notes of lemon zest, and subtle tropical fruits, along with hints of toast and oak. The velvety texture is contrasted by a crisp vein of acidity, carrying the wine to a mineral-rich finish. Nk’Mip Cellars’ Chardonnay has received prestigious awards over the years, including medals from WineAlign and Chardonnay Du Monde. It will be the perfect companion for seafood, roasted chicken, or a slice of pungent, creamy cheese.
