Located in the winemaking region of Kutjevo in eastern Croatia where wine has been made since at least 1232, Krauthaker winery was founded in 1992 with just 1 hectare of land. Today the estate has grown to encompass 110 hectares and specialises in the Grasevina grape, the local name for Welschriesling. The vineyards are planted on the slopes of Krndija with excellent sun exposure and top quality soils which allow them to produce a range of styles ranging from crisp, dry white wines to sweet late harvest Grasevina.
This bottling is made as an orange wine with the must left to macerate on the grape skins for 60 days. This extended skin contact helps to extract plenty of aromas, flavour and tannins from the grape skins, producing a robust and characterful wine which opens up and evolves in the glass over time.
Dried apricots, baked apple, bright citrus and seaweed dominate on the nose, while the first sip reveals a generous full body, subtle tannins and well-defined structure. On the palate there are multiple layers of flavour, moving from dried fruits and tropical fruit to herbs, hints of leather, and wild mushrooms. The complexity makes this a great wine to pair with food, especially roasted chicken, goat cheeses, or fish dishes served with a rich sauce.
