The noble Chateau Suduiraut is one of the top producers of Sauternes, the lusciously sweet dessert wine that uses the noble rot fungus to help intensify the flavours and sugars in the grapes. Located close to the legendary Chateau d’Yqyem, the original chateau building dates back to 1580 and is surrounded by some 90 acres of vineyards which have an average age of 30 years.
Suduiraut takes a traditional approach to winemaking, vinifying and ageing their wines in French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months depending on the particular characteristics of the vintage. This adds extra complexity and polish to the finished wine, with delicate notes of exotic spice, toasted nuts, and woodsmoke mingling on the palate with succulent tropical fruit, honey, and floral notes from the fruit.
The rich sweetness of this classic Sauternes make it a magnificent alternative to dessert or accompaniment to a wide variety of food ranging from blue cheeses, foie gras, fresh seafood, and even spicy Asian dishes. For those who have a little more patience, the robust flavour profile mean it will age beautifully in the cellar over the next decade or more.
