Chateau Palmer takes its name from the British army general who purchased the property in 1814, although the original estate dates right back to the 17th century. Although officially ranked as a third growth chateau in 1855, today Chateau Palmer is considered one of the region’s top “Super Seconds” and a close rival to its neighbour, the first growth Chateau Margaux. In good vintages the wines of Chateau Palmer regularly compete with Bordeaux’s finest and the estate also leads the region for their commitment to biodynamic viticulture.
As well as their stunning Grand Vin which needs several decades to reach optimum maturity, Chateau Palmer also produces Alter Ego which is designed to be more approachable in its youth. Like the Grand Vin this cuvee is primarily composed of Merlot along with plenty of Cabernet Sauvignon and a dash of Petit Verdot.
Cassis, black cherry, cinnamon and cedar wood are first out of the glass followed by subtle hints of bitter licorice, mint and baking spice. On the palate there’s a very firm structure, taut tannins and a robust full body which will help this wine to age beautifully in the cellar over the next decade and beyond. If you do decide to enjoy it now, pair this powerful red with hearty dishes like steak, venison, beef bourguignon or even barbecued meats.
