Alma Negra means “Black Soul” in Spanish and refers to the seductive character of the Bonarda grape which has been used to make most of this unique label’s wines. Bonarda is widely used to make vibrant and fruity red wines in Argentina where it is regarded as the second national grape after Malbec. Alma Negra was founded by fourth generation winemaker Ernesto Catena, the son of world-famous enologist Nicolás Catena Zapata whose hard work helped establish Argentina’s global reputation for exceptional Malbec wines.

Following in the footsteps of his father, Ernesto is on a mission to tell the world about Argentina’s other top grape variety, Bonarda. He focuses on producing wines that are both easy-going and delicious to drink without any hint of pretentiousness. This extends to the winery and vineyard where he seeks to work in harmony with nature by avoiding chemical treatments and working to biodynamic principles.

Grapes for this bottling are sourced from Vistaflores in Mendoza where the high altitude helps to produce lusciously ripe fruit with vibrant flavours and aromas. Following vinification the young wine is matured in French and American oak barrels for 8 months. The result is a dark and handsome red that’s bursting with ripe cherries, plums and crushed berries along with a full body, firm tannins, and very long finish with hints of cloves, cinnamon and dark chocolate.
