History

Multiple sources and critics claim that Domaine Eden produces some of California's best wines. In 2007, Domaine Eden (formerly the home of Cinnabar Winery) was purchased by Mount Eden Vineyards. Domaine Eden is the wine brand that specializes in Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, while Mount Eden's larger vineyard produces the Bordeaux varietals. It is located 2000 feet above the Silicon Valley town of Saratoga, California atop Table Mountain in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It was originally founded by Jeffrey Patterson, who remains co-owner of Mount Eden Vineyards and serves as the winemaker. He had graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a degree in Biology, going on to study for two years in the viticulture and enology program at U.C. Davis, before arriving at the winery and serving as winemaker in 1981. While the vineyards have undergone change of ownership and replanting over of the years, they still produce some of the top wines in California.

Interesting Facts

Domaine Eden is known to produce some of the best Chardonnays in California. Even the Pinot Noirs, which are typically a difficult grape to handle, have done well under this winery's care, resulting in some of California's best Pinots. The winemaking process is handled by Jeffrey Patterson, who has seen the evolution in various aspects over the past 30 years serving as winemaker for the winery. Take stemming, for instance. In the 1970s, they used 100% of the stems in the fermentation process, but he didn't include any stems in fermentation when he arrived on the scene in 1981. Gradually, he has started to add more and more stems, not so much for the taste of stem, but rather, in order to slow the fermentation process. Another point of change over the years has been with the Oak barrels. In the 80s, they were 100% new (half François Frères, half Sirugue), but now, an ideal harvest utilizes half new barrels and half from the previous season. It is no doubt, partly thanks to this level of detail and attention that the winery has been able to produce such high quality wines over the last few decades.
