Wines included in a case
San Roman Cartago Paraje de Pozo Toro 2015
This majestic Spanish red is the flagship wine of Bodegas y Vinedos San Roman which was founded by Mariano García in 1998 in the up-and-coming Toro region. Mariano worked for the world-renowned Vega Sicilia winery for thirty years before leaving to found his own family winery where he works with his two sons, Alberto and Eduardo. In total they own 100 hectares of vineyards in Toro where the extreme continental climate with hot, dry summers and very cold winters is ideal for making powerful and concentrated red wines.
This special single vineyard wine is crafted from 45 year old Tinta de Toro vines, the local clone of the classic Tempranillo grape variety. On this 5 hectare plot called El Pozo the ungrafted vines are planted on very sandy soils and are farmed organically to produce the best quality fruit possible. In the winery the grapes are carefully vinified and the young wine is aged in new and used French oak barrels for 36 months.
Big, bold and packed with dark fruit character, this powerful wine is a great addition to any collector’s cellar and it will continue to evolve and develop over the next decade or so. It can also be enjoyed now alongside hearty dishes like steak, beef stews or fresh pasta served with a rich ragu.
Arzuaga Reserva Especial 2012
This magnificent Reserva Especial from Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro is crafted from grapes carefully selected from the estate’s ancient vineyards. These noble Tinta del Pais and Albilla vines were planted over a century ago in this charmed corner of Ribera del Duero. Planted on limestone and clay soils and blessed with plentiful sunshine and cool nights even during the summer, these vines produce small quantities of this incredibly concentrated Reserva Especial.
The estate insists on harvesting all of the grapes for this wine by hand to ensure they reach the winery in optimum condition. The wines then undergo fermentation in barrels followed by a 24 month period of maturation in new French oak barrels to add extra layers of complexity and create a soft and well-rounded character.
On the nose this gorgeous Reserva Especial exudes seductive notes of leather, dark chocolate and dark plum jam which are joined on the palate by ripe red berries, sweet spices and hints of toasted nuts. Full-bodied and incredibly smooth on the palate, the firm structure of this red wine makes it an excellent partner for rich meat stews, hard cheeses or earthy game dishes.
Artadi Valdegines 2017
Seductive cassis, crushed blackberries and dried Mediterranean herbs delight the nose, while the first sip reveals an elegant structure, generous full body, silky soft tannins and enticing wild berry flavours. The very long finish and balancing freshness of the Valdegines make this an ideal bottle to treat loved ones on a special occasion. Try pairing this graceful Rioja with suckling pig roasted in the oven or herby lamb chops for a match truly made in heaven.
Although only founded some 35 years ago, the Artadi estate has quickly built a reputation for top Rioja wines which express an authentic sense of the local terroir. The Valdegines is one of their three premium single vineyard wines which all have a unique character honed by the microclimate and soil conditions of each particular site.
Located at 650 metres above sea level, the east-facing Valdegines vineyard in Laguardia help to produce intensely concentrated aromas and flavours while retaining freshness in the wine thanks to the cool nights. All of the grapes are harvested by hand and fermented using indigenous yeasts before the wine is aged in new French oak barrels for 12 months.
Mauro Vendimia Seleccionada 2017
Mariano García served as technical manager for thirty years at the world-famous Vega Sicilia winery in Ribera del Duero before beginning his own project in Tudela de Duero just 19 km north of Madrid. The region is one of Spain’s most important wine producers and is known for its full-flavoured red wines made from the classic Tempranillo grape.
In total the estate has 80 hectares of vines in Tudela de Duero and Santibáñez de Valcorba where conditions are ideal for making full bodied reds thanks to the hot sunny days and cool nights which help preserve freshness and aromatic complexity. This bottling is made from the very best grapes from the estate sourced from old vines with the young wine aged in French and American oak for 32 months.
This extended ageing creates a multi-layered and intense flavour profile with smooth tannins and a well-developed structure which will respond very well to cellaring for at least another decade or so. The nose opens with bold dark fruit along with hints of cigar box spice, vanilla and toast while the first sip reveals a generous full body, very smooth entry and long, lingering dark berry flavours.
Vega Sicilia Pintia 2015
Vega Sicilia is one of Spain’s most famous wineries thanks to their groundbreaking work in Ribera del Duero. The owners of Vega Sicilia, the Álvarez family, purchased Bodegas Pintia in 1996 and have played a visionary role in revitalising the D.O Toro appellation. The region bears some resemblance to Ribera del Duero with hot, dry summers, although conditions can be harsher here and the terroir is characterised by well-draining pebble soils.
This magnificent Spanish red is made from top quality Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) fruit from San Román de Hornija where the vines have an average age of 40 years. The grapes are harvested by hand and are chilled on arrival at the winery to preserve acidity and aromatics. Following vinification the young wine is aged in 70% French and 30% American oak barrels for 12 months before bottling.
The nose opens with hints of dried violets and intense dark cherry and plum aromas which seem to burst out of the glass. On the palate there is a perfect balance between power and elegance with bold tannins and a firm structure harmoniously complemented by gentle freshness and rich crushed berry flavours. Complex and muscular, this is a great wine to cellar for another decade or so, although it can also be enjoyed now alongside hearty red meat dishes.
