Acustic Celler Acustic Blanc 2016
Expressive aromas of white peaches, thyme, fennel and lemon zest awaken the senses, while the vivacious palate offers racy freshness, a well-rounded mouthfeel and intense apricot and citrus flavours. The fine balance between acidity, alcohol and a generous full body makes this an excellent partner for salmon tartare, steamed cockles or a typical local Catalan dish of salted cod served with vegetables.
The Acustic Blanc is a versatile white wine with a multifaceted, complex personality thanks to the four different grape varieties that make up the blend. The dominant variety is Garnacha Blanca, which helps to give a rounded, creamy texture to the wine, followed by Macabeo and a drop of Garnacha Tinta and Pansal which is also known locally as Xarel.lo.
Winemaker Albert Jané sources all of the grapes for this distinctive white from 35 to 80 year old vines planted across the Montsant wine region. Here the intense arid climate, organic farming and poor soils help to produce incredibly flavourful fruit that Albert harvests by hand. He then ferments 70% of the wine in stainless steel tanks and the remaining 30% in new French oak barrels before ageing the wine on the lees for 4 months to add extra complexity.
Nisia Las Suertes 2017
Bodegas Ordóñez are considered one of the top local producers of Verdejo in Rueda thanks to their unique ancient vineyards which date back to 1885. Located near the town of Puras, this part of Rueda had the good fortune to escape the phylloxera disease which devastated European wine industry in the 19th century. Today the estate boasts one of just a handful of ungrafted Verdejo vineyards which is capable of producing sensational white wines.
To ensure the grapes reach the winery in perfect condition Bodegas Ordóñez insists on harvesting by hand. The wine is then fermented using indigenous yeasts in large oak barrels before spending 12 months maturing on the lees in those barrels to add a delicious creamy texture and additional complexity.
As you pour out a glass you’ll immediately notice the brilliant straw yellow hue and exotic aromas of ripe white peaches, pineapple, and toasty notes from the extended maturation process. The first sip reveals a full body, hint of acidity and very long finish with plenty of mature tropical fruit character. An ideal partner for chicken served in a creamy sauce, summer salads or hard cheeses like Manchego or Pecorino.
Pares Balta Cosmic 2018
Set in the gorgeous Penedes countryside close to the vibrant city of Barcelona, Parés Baltà is a family-run winery with a passion for top quality winemaking and care of the natural world. The estate is run by brothers Joan and Josep Cusiné while their talented wives, Elena Jimenez and Marta Casas, take care of the winemaking. To produce the best quality grapes possible, the estate is farmed organically and the family also use traditional practices like using sheep to naturally fertilize the vineyards.
The Cosmic Blanco is a light and fresh white wine which is made from Xarel·lo and a smaller proportion of Sauvignon Blanc grapes. The must is fermented in stainless steel tanks for 18 days and then aged on the lees for 3 months to give a creamy texture and soft, smooth mouthfeel.
On the nose the Cosmic Blanco exudes crisp aromas of green apples, lemon zest, and honeysuckle, while the first sip reveals a bright acidity, ripe stone fruit flavours, and a hint of flinty minerality. The fresh and lively personality of this wine make it ideal to serve as an aperitif or alongside fresh seafood and Mediterranean fish dishes.
Palacio de Fefifanes Albarino de Fefifanes 2018
Palacio de Fefifanes occupies a special place in Spanish wine circles as the first winery to bottle an Albariño wine in 1928. Today the modern, custom-built winery occupies the ancient cloisters of the imposing 17th century palace and the grapes are carefully sourced from 66 local families who have been working with the estate for decades.
Palacio de Fefifanes’ flagship wine is their Albariño de Fefifanes which was the very first example of the variety to be bottled in 1928. The bottle still bears the original label design which was created by the jeweller and master craftsman Enrique Mayer when the first bottles were released.
To preserve the uniquely aromatic and fresh character of the Albariño the grapes are vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks and left to settle over the winter. The result is a crisp, vibrant white wine which opens with enticing hints of lemon zest, green apple and honeysuckle. On the palate the wine has a pleasantly light touch with plenty of racy acidity, gentle stone fruit flavours and a long clean finish. Ideal to serve well chilled as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to grilled fish, fresh seafood, or a chilled gazpacho soup.
Botani Moscatel Old Vines 2017
Botani is the result of a collaboration between renowned Spanish wine exporter Jorge Ordonez and Austria’s top sweet wine producer, the Kracher family. This unique dry white wine comes from the D.O. Sierras de Málaga wine region in southern Spain and is made with the Muscat of Alexandria grape which was brought to the area from Alexandria in Egypt by the Phoenicians.
The very difficult terrain here makes viticulture challenging since the vineyards are on steep north-facing slopes at 400 to 600 metres of altitude and need to be harvested and tended by hand. Many of the Muscat vines here are up to 70 years old and help to produce a very fragrant wine which is light and refreshing despite the extremely hot climate.
The nose sings with orange blossom, ripe apricots, peaches and crisp lemon zest, while the first sip reveals a racy acidity and generous stone fruit flavours. The winery ages the wine on the lees for 8 months to give a richer, creamier texture and a pleasing roundness to the wine. Thanks to its vivacious character and fragrant nose, Botani is the perfect wine to serve alongside spicy Asian dishes like Thai curries or noodle dishes.
Vinos Sanz Finca La Colina El Loco 2018
With an illustrious history stretching back to 1870 , Vinos Sanz is the oldest winery in the Rueda wine region in North West Spain. Their winemaking philosophy centres around creating the very best raw ingredients, the grapes which go into their wines, in order to craft authentic and distinctive Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc wines.
Their El Loco or “The Crazy One” is a careful composition of Rueda’s two iconic grape varieties, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdejo. This easygoing white blend is made with fruit sourced from Vinos Sanz’s prestigious Finca La Colina vineyard. To express the pure varietal character of both grapes, the fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a temperature of 14°C over a period of 15 to 20 days.
The enchanting nose displays ripe aromas of white peaches, mangoes, pineapple and fresh lemon zest, while the first sip reveals a crisp acidity and intriguing hints of aniseed along with rich tropical fruit flavours. The well-developed structure and poised balance of this wine make it an excellent accompaniment to seafood and fish dishes. For an authentic taste of Spain, try serving a well chilled bottle with a traditional paella or alongside a selection of cured meats and cheeses.
