Filippo Cassano decided to return to his family’s viticultural roots in 2003, setting up his Polvanera winery near the small town of Gioia del Colle in the south-eastern Puglia. He named his venture Polvanera or “black dust” after the dark soil so typical of the area which surrounds the winery. In order to produce the best possible grapes Filippo farms his vineyards organically and his plots are all sited at altitudes of between 300 and 450 metres which helps to preserve balancing freshness in the grapes.
Filippo’s Polvanera 16 Primitivo is a masterful expression of this traditional Puglian grape, opening with enticing aromas of blackcurrants and blackberries along with hints of dried Mediterranean herbs. The first sip reveals a full body, well-rounded tannins and intense dark berry and spice flavours which are carefully balanced by a fresh acidity.
Filippo Cassano is known locally for his key role in reviving the Primitivo grape and creating modern, balanced expressions which are ideal partners for traditional local dishes of slow-cooked lamb and mature hard cheeses. His Polvanera 16 Primitivo is aged in stainless steel tanks for 24 months followed by a year in the bottle to help emphasise and preserve the pure character of the grape variety.
