Martin Nigl’s family have been growing grapes in Austria’s idyllic Kremstal Valley for over 200 years, but it was not until 1985 that Martin persuaded the family to keep the fruit from their estate’s vines and bottle it themselves rather than selling it to the local cooperative as usual. Over the intervening years Martin has built a solid reputation for producing gorgeous Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners which enjoy international acclaim.
The grapes that go into this wine are grown in the Nigl family’s vineyards which are set on terraces on south-east facing slopes which helps to maximise exposure to the sun. The granitic soils here contain plenty of mica schist which gives a distinctive purity and mineral character to the family’s wines. To preserve the wonderful natural environment of the Kremstal Valley, the Nigls use biodynamic practices in the vineyard and avoid using herbicides, pesticides, or copper.
The Goldberg Riesling is a pure, laser-focused example of the varietal which opens with clean gooseberry, lychee and hints of flint on the nose. The first sip reveals a racy acidity, light body and bright citrus, baked apple and stone fruit flavours. A sensational dry Riesling that is ideal to pair with Asian cuisine, light salads, or fresh seafood.
