Nigl Grüner Veltliner Piri 2017

This fresh, crisp Grüner Veltliner opens with fragrant notes of peaches, bright citrus fruit and red apples. The first sip reveals a racy acidity, ripe stone fruit flavours and a clean finish with hints of salty minerality. Vibrant and elegant in style, the Piri is an ideal wine to serve as a refreshing aperitif and also makes an excellent partner for seafood, pan-fried fish and chicken served in a creamy sauce.

The grapes that go into this wine are sourced from the Nigl family’s vineyards which sit on some of the best sites between Krems and Senftenbeg in Austria’s Kremstal valley. The vines are grown on terraces built onto south-east facing slopes which help to maximise exposure to the sun. Here the soils are rich in granite and mica schist which helps to bring out a distinctive mineral character in the Nigl family’s wines.

Inspired by the pristine environment of the Kremstal valley, the Nigls grow their grapes and make their wines with the utmost respect for nature. They apply biodynamic principles in the vineyard, do not use herbicides or pesticides on their vines and also avoid the use of copper. In the cellar Martin Nigl uses wild yeasts, does not destem the grapes arriving at the winery and avoids fining the wines before bottling in order to create pure, laser-focused expressions of the local terroir and traditional Austrian grape varieties.
