Edmond de Rothschild Flechas De Los Andes Gran Malbec 2017
Flechas De Los Andes was born in 2003 out of a collaboration between Baron Benjamin de Rothschild and Laurent Dassault who joined together to found a top winery in the foothills of the mighty Andes mountains. The winery is named after the five arrows or “flechas” in Spanish that are the symbol of the five brothers of the Rothschild family who are known for founding some of the world’s most prestigious wineries in France and beyond.
The winery is located in Mendoza where the high altitude vineyards and sunny summer days are ideal for premium winemaking. Well-draining sandy and gravel soils combined with the cooling breezes from the Andes and higher elevation ensures that the grapes reach maximum ripeness while retaining plenty of freshness and aromatic complexity.
This sumptuous Malbec is made from top quality grapes which are harvested by hand and vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The young wine is then aged in a combination of tanks and oak barrels for 12 months to add complexity while preserving the pure varietal character. The result is a rich full bodied wine with plenty of luscious dark berry character, smooth tannins and a long finish.
Covenant Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2017
This stunning Cabernet is the handiwork of famed winemaker and former Wine Spectator editor Jeff Morgan. Morgan co-founded Covenant Wines in 2003 out of a vision to make top quality kosher wines in Napa and today the winery is widely considered one of the world’s top kosher wine producers. Covenant wines have been highly praised by top international wine reviewers like Robert Parker and Wine Spectator for their excellent quality and authentic flavour profiles.
The Covenant Napa Cabernet is a truly magnificent kosher red composed of prime fruit from Mount Veeder and Oakville. Rather than crushing the grapes to release the juice, this wine is only made from the free run juice which gives greater purity of flavour and intensity of fruit. The young wine is aged in French oak barrels for 18 months to add finesse and extra complexity before bottling.
On the nose there are intense blackcurrant, dark cherry and cedar notes while the first sip reveals succulent crushed berries, licorice and hints of dark chocolate. The firm tannins, muscular structure and full body make this a great partner for hearty red meat dishes, although it also makes a handsome addition to any collector’s cellar and will continue to evolve over the next decade and beyond.
Domaine du Castel Petit Castel 2018
The Petit Castel is the second wine of Domaine du Castel and it is made in a classic Bordeaux-style from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec grapes sourced from the estate’s finest plots. Following vinification the wine is aged in French oak barrels for 12 months and then matured in concrete tanks for an additional 4 months before bottling.
On the nose there are seductive hints of crushed dark berries, wild roses, and leather while the first sip reveals a rich full body, smooth tannins, and bright streak of acidity which will help the wine to age gracefully over the next five years or so. The excellent balance between ripe fruit flavours and firm structure make this a great wine to pair with food, especially red meat dishes like a fine steak, beef stew, or even game.
Domaine du Castel was founded in 1988 by Eli Ben Zaken who had emigrated to Israel from Milan and purchased a small farm near Jerusalem. He planted the first modern vineyard in the Judean Hills and received an incredibly positive response to his first wine, the Grand Vin, which he still produces in very limited quantities.
Flam Syrah Reserve 2017
Brothers Golan and Gilad Flam were inspired to found their own winery after touring some of Tuscany’s finest estates in the 1990s. Their mother, Kami, takes care of the business side of the venture while Golan is in charge of winemaking after studying in Italy and gaining valuable cellar experience in South Australia and Tuscany.
The tiny boutique winery produces just 150,000 bottles per year and their wines are admired by collectors and wine critics across the globe. Their line of Reserve wines are made in an Old World style with the finest grapes harvested from the family’s Ben Zimra and Dishon vineyards in the Upper Galilee. The grapes are harvested by hand at night to preserve acidity and the delicate aromatics so they arrive in the winery in perfect condition. Following vinification the Syrah Reserve is aged in French oak barrels for 12 months and then left to mature in the bottle for an additional 10 months.
Inspired by a trip to the Rhone Valley, this intense Reserve wine is reminiscent of its French cousins with an abundance of rich dark fruit and herbal hints on the nose. The first sip reveals a full body, fine tannins, and firm structure which will help this wine age beautifully in the cellar over the next decade or so. For those who prefer to enjoy it now, try pairing the wine with hearty red meat dishes like a fine steak or beef bourguignon.
Psagot Edom 2017
This majestic Israeli wine is a Bordeaux-style blend composed of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot sourced from prime vineyards in the Jerusalem Hills. On the nose there are enticing hints of cassis and crushed dark berries while the first sip reveals a full body, firm tannins and a long finish with subtle spiced notes. Matured in oak barrels for 14 months, Edom is a powerful and intense kosher red wine that pairs well with hearty red meat dishes like roast beef, steak and even barbecued meats.
Psagot winery is an award-winning estate located in Binyamin just to the north of Jerusalem with stunning vineyards set on mountain terraces at 700-900 metres above sea level. Conditions here are ideal for producing quality wines thanks to the sunny summer days cooled by breezes from the hills which helps to preserve aromatic complexity in the grapes.
This is a truly ancient winemaking region which is reputed to be the home of Abraham who grew grapes and farmed here thousands of years ago. Evidence of this long viticultural history is found on the Psagot labels which feature a coin found in an ancient wine press on the estate that dates back to the First Jewish–Roman War of 66-73 CE.
Capcanes Peraj Ha'Abib Kosher 2017
The village of Capcanes in Catalonia has been producing wines since the 13th century and is home to one of the region’s most successful cooperatives. The Celler de Capcanes was founded in 1933 by five local families who saw an opportunity to work together to improve the quality and efficiency of their winemaking practices. Over the years the cooperative has grown in size as many local producers have chosen to join the family.
In 1995 the cooperative initiated a new venture after Barcelona’s Jewish community contacted the winery about producing kosher wines made according to the strict Lo Mevushal method. Today the cooperative is known all over the world for its excellent kosher wines like the opulent Peraj Ha’Abib.
This gorgeous Garnacha-led red blend is made under supervision of a local rabbi and undergoes maturation in new French oak barrels for 12 months. The result is an inky ruby hued wine that enchants the nose with rich aromas of dark berries, coffee and cacao. On the palate the wine has a refined structure, soft tannins and a very long finish. This characterful kosher wine is ideal for family gatherings and celebrations and will continue to evolve and develop if cellared for up to a decade or so.
