Lagrein
Kellerei Bozen Lagrein Riserva Taber 2017
Drink now through to 2028. No need to decant before serving.
The Alto Adige region of northern Italy is best known for its crisp white wines, but the hidden secret of this mountainous land is the Lagrein grape which is used to make aromatic and intense red wines. Grapes for this bottling are grown on the valley floor close to Bolzano at an altitude of 250 metres above sea level. The vines here are over 80 years old and are planted on well-draining alluvial soils which help to produce remarkably concentrated fruit of exceptional quality.
After the harvest in late September or October the grapes are vinified in the traditional way in wooden vats and are then transferred to oak barriques where the young wine ages for a year. The result is an intense, full-bodied wine with smooth tannins, rich dark fruit flavours and a fresh acidity which brings harmony and balance. This bold Lagrein is a great match for game, hearty red meat dishes and aged cheeses.
Kellerei Bozen is a highly successful cooperative winery that was created by the merger of Gries and St. Magdalena wineries. In total the winery has 350 hectares of vines that are worked and owned by some 220 local families, enabling them to produce a vast variety of different grape varieties and wine styles.
