The Herdade do Peso estate has been owned by the Guedes family since 1996 and is situated in the warmest part of Alentejo on the limestone soils of Vidígueira in the south. Here conditions are ideal for crafting expressive and intense red wines which are full of rich flavours balanced by freshness thanks to the cool nights enjoyed by the vines even during the summer.
Following the harvest the grapes are destemmed and gently crushed before being transferred to stainless steel tanks where the must is macerated and fermented. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels for around 12 months to add extra complexity and smooth out the firm tannins from the Syrah. The winemaker then decides on the final blend and the wine is fined and filtered before bottling.
Heady aromas of blackberries, cassis and ripe plum characterise the nose, while the palate offers bold dark berry flavours and hints of tobacco, Mediterranean herbs and cedar. There is a generous full body and smooth tannins which are complemented by a balancing freshness and a long elegant finish. This easy-going red is an ideal match for charcuterie, hard cheeses and dishes like roasted beef.
