The Antichi Vigneti di Cantalupo estate’s flagship wine, the Collis Breclemae is closely linked to the emergence of this producer as a leading Piedmontese winery. Although the Arlunno family that own the estate can trace their winemaking presence in the region back to the early 1600s, the estate only began bottling and selling their own wines in the early 1980s when Alberto Arlunno took over the reins of the estate.
One of the first wines to be bottled by the estate in 1979, the Collis Breclemae is still made to this day and has become regarded as one of Ghemme’s finest Nebbiolos. The wine takes its name from the vineyard which sits above the ruined medieval village of Breclema and is planted with old vines on rocky, mineral-rich soils. After the grapes are picked in the second half of October the grape must is macerated and fermented for two weeks before being aged in large used barrels for 36 months.
The finished wine is a strong contender for extended cellar ageing thanks to the robust tannins, full body and balancing freshness. On the nose intricate layers of fresh cherries, rose petals, leather and dark chocolate mingle with earthy and herbal undertones which carry through onto the palate. The first sip is soft and generous with the firm structure emerging on the mid-palate and a remarkably long finish. Consider serving this stunning Nebbiolo alongside a prime rib-eye steak or hearty beef stew to complement the intense flavour profile of the wine.
